SHE Talks: "It's not you, it's the system"

About Lesson

‘It’s not you; it’s the system’: Navigating gendered norms, rules and expectations of political institutions, that you didn’t create.

In this talk, Dr Fiona Buckley (UCC) discusses why challenges women face in political life, are often an outcome of the gendered nature of political institutions. Drawing from academic research about parties and parliaments, their gendered nature, and the presence of women, Fiona unpacks the invisible rules and norms that shape women’s navigation of political life. Using the concept of  and employing  theory, she discusses the gendered structures and expectations that shape behaviour, impact confidence, but also presents opportunities for change within political institutions.
